JHSC Certification - Part 2 - Construction

The Ministry of Labour has established new training standard that is now in effect as of March 1st, 2016.

If your business has over 20 employees and a current need to get staff certified, you are required to complete this training.

Here is a quick breakdown of the New JHSC Training Standard:

JHSC Part 1
Minimum of 3 days (19.5 hours)

JHSC Part 2
Minimum of 2 days (13 hours) and must be secured within 6 months of the part 1*
*Training Providers must be MOL approved under the new training standard
*JHSC Part 2 Construction Minimum of 3 days

Refresher Training
1 day (6.5 hours) every 3 years

Once the JHSC members have successfully completed ‘Basic Certification Training’, they are required to fulfill the requirements of ‘Part 2 - Specific to Construction Workplaces’. This involves performing a risk assessment to ensure proper RECOGNITION, of hazards in the workplace. Training is required in properly assessing those hazards and implementing adequate controls.

Based on Your Hazard Assessment, the Following Hazard Modules would apply to your Workplace:

  • Review of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations that pertain to Construction.
  • Housekeeping and Fire Safety
  • Personal Fall Protection
  • Personal Protective Equipment
  • Safe Use of Hand Tools
  • Scaffold Safety
  • Thermal Conditions (Heat and Cold Stress)
  • Traffic Control
  • Trenching and Excavations
